The Foundations of Algebra and Algebra 1 sequence are two math classes that earn students two math credits at the end of their freshmen year. The sequence is designed to build in middle school background skills necessary for Algebra 1 while allowing the pacing of the Algebra 1 material to be slowed down. By successfully completing these two courses, students will have earned two of the four necessary math credits required for graduation in the state of Georgia.
The Foundations of Algebra course takes place in the Fall only. The first half of the Foundations of Algebra course covers the background skills while the second half of the course covers the study over Linear Equations & Functions and Systems of Equations. These two topics were introduced in 8th grade so at the high school level, it is designed to review these topics while diving deeper into the content.
The Algebra 1 course, which takes place in the Spring, is designed to cover the remaining four units of the Algebra 1 standards. All material covered in the spring is completely brand new material for students. By only having four units to cover in the spring, the pacing of the class is slowed down while allowing students to learning the material conceptually and cover a bigger depth of understanding.
